Grant’s Story
In June 2002, The Lord blessed us with a beautiful and much wanted baby boy. I already had a beautiful daughter, and a little boy would complete the much wanted family I had always wanted. Grant was born by a planned C-Section at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. The Doctor told me by the looks of the Sonogram, I was having a 10 lb boy. When Grant was born, I did not hear a cry. I looked over at him looking around the room as the doctor held him up for me to see him. He weighed 6 lbs 12 oz. They brought him to me shortly after they took me to my room. He was perfect, I thought.
Grant’s APGAR score was 9.9. That meant that he was a perfectly healthy newborn, except for a little Jaundice. We stayed in the hospital for 4 days, because of my c-section. I started to try and nurse, but he did not latch on very well. We came home on a Saturday morning. He was the best baby anyone could have ever wanted. He slept through the nights and was very quiet. At 8 weeks, Grant started having seizures. I was not sure what they were but knew it was not normal. I took him to see his pediatrician. She told me that it was nothing to worry about, and that he was having Myoclonic spells. She sent us home and told me that, if they continued that I would need to take him to see a Neurologist.
After a few days, they did continue and I took him to see a Neurologist at Fairfax Hospital, where they did an EEG. While he was hooked up to all these wires, Grant had a long seizure. They admitted him to the NICU at Fairfax Hospital immediately, where they did an MRI on his brain. The MRI showed nothing abnormal. The doctor stated he thought we were out of the woods, and Grant was discharged from the hospital the next day. We went home thinking everything was fine. Grant continued to seize throughout the day. I then called another Neurologist at Children’s Hospital. He was adamant that I bring Grant to Children’s Hospital immediately. This is when the real nightmare begins.
